What is pediatric electrophysiology (EP)?
Electrophysiology focuses on arrhythmias, which are irregular heartbeats caused by abnormal electrical signals. It is a specialty area within pediatric cardiology (the branch of medicine that deals with heart problems in children). Electrophysiologists can treat all kinds of arrhythmias, and use advanced tests and procedures that are necessary for the most complex cases.
The electrophysiology test, or EP test, is one of these advanced tests. It helps us create a detailed map of the heart that shows exactly where your child’s arrhythmia comes from. Then we can treat that exact spot with a process called radiofrequency ablation, which kills the abnormal cells and prevents the arrhythmia from happening again.
About our pediatric cardiac electrophysiology team
Children’s Health has one of only a few electrophysiology programs in Texas that specializes in treating children. Our program includes doctors, nurses and technicians who specialize in pediatric arrhythmias and the tools and techniques required to treat the most serious cases.
