Most irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) are harmless. But some can pose serious risks. The Pediatric Electrophysiology Program at Children's Health℠ has a range of tests and treatments to help kids with dangerous or bothersome arrhythmias grow up safe and active. And we have the experience needed to reassure parents when their child’s irregular rhythm isn’t a concern.
We provide a full spectrum of care for pediatric arrhythmias. This includes using state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures and genetic testing, prescribing medication and implanting devices. We also offer advanced treatments like radiofrequency ablation, which is a minimally invasive procedure that is very effective at curing some arrhythmias.

What is pediatric electrophysiology (EP)?
Electrophysiology focuses on arrhythmias, which are irregular heartbeats caused by abnormal electrical signals. It is a specialty area within pediatric cardiology (the branch of medicine that deals with heart problems in children). Electrophysiologists can treat all kinds of arrhythmias, and use advanced tests and procedures that are necessary for the most complex cases.
The electrophysiology test, or EP test, is one of these advanced tests. It helps us create a detailed map of the heart that shows exactly where your child’s arrhythmia comes from. Then we can treat that exact spot with a process called radiofrequency ablation, which kills the abnormal cells and prevents the arrhythmia from happening again.
